Classes (Option 1)


Dungeons & Dragons®.

This chapter provides details on psionics so that everyone doesn’t have to buy a copy of the Psionics Handbook.  I also have some “house rules” dealing with psionics.  My house rules will always be hi-lighted with a gray background so you can identify the “base” system from mine. Rules that apply only in the old system have lettering in gray. 


Psionic Classes

The base psionic system defines two classes: the psion (parallels the scorcerer) and psychic warrior.  After much thought, I have decided that there really should be three classes: psion, wild talent (parallels bard), and psychic warrior (closer to a paladin or ranger).

Psion

The psion spends his time in meditation and study.  He continually strives to improve his mastery and discovery of latent abilities.

Adventures: The psion sees adventuring as a way to test himself.

Characteristics: A psion doesn’t have a spell book.  Like a sorcerer, he knows his powers without study.  All psions must select an area of primary study, his primary discipline.

Alignment: Tend toward neutrality.

Religion: Tend not to be drawn to any particular diety.

Background: Most that choose psion as a class have demonstrated mental ability all their lives.  Moreover, they have come to accept their gifts and seek out the guidance of their fellow comrades.

Races: Any.  The Illithid race demonstrates incredible psychic power without even taking levels of psion.

Game Rule Information

Psions have the following game statistics.

Abilities: Abilities play several roles for psions.  First, each psionic discipline is keyed to an associated stat.  (This is different from arcane spell casters whom use either their charisma or intelligence to determine bonus spells and maximum spell level.)  To manifest a power requires an ability score of 10 + the power’s level in the associated stat.  Second, the psion gains bonus power points based on his primary discipline’s stat.  Starting at 1st level, and every two levels thereafter, the psion with a high primary stat gains more power points per day.

Alignment: Any.

Hit Die: d4.

Class Skills

The psion’s class skills vary by the psion’s primary discipline.  See the section on skills for a complete table.

Skill Points at 1st Level: (4 + Int Modifier) x 4.

Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 4 + Int Modifier.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Proficient with all simple weapons, but no armor or shields.  Armor does not interfere with the manifestation of psychic powers, unlike arcane magic.

Powers: Any.

Power Points: Every time a psionic power is manifested, the psion must pay a cost in power points.  The psion may use his daily allotment of power points any way he chooses.

0-Level Powers: Any.

Psionic Combat Modes: Any.

Psicrystal: Any.

Starting Gold: 3d4x10 gp.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: All simple and martial weapons, all armor types (light, medium, and heavy) and shields.

Weapon Specialization: At 6th level the psychic warrior gets a free weapon specialization feat.  This feat is in addition to his regular feat gained at 6th level (useful, since to weapon specialize requires weapon finesse first).  He does not gain weapon specialization again in the future.

Powers: Any.

Power Points: Any.

0-Level Powers: Any.

Psionic Combat Modes: Any.

Starting Gold: 5d4x10 gp.

 

Multiclass Psionic Characters

All psionic character classes learn and manifest their powers similarly. As a result, the various psionic classes can be take as part of a multiclass character. However, the different classes psionic experience stacks instead of overlaps. (This is different from the bard, sorcerer, and wizard whom each learn and cast spells differently.)

A character’s overall psionic level and power points is determined by equating his lower level classes to his strongest level psionic class.  The table below should be used for this conversion.
